The second edition of the Rivers State Keves Global Football Competition kicked off on Tuesday at the Sharks Football Stadium in Port Harcourt.
Managing Director, Keves Global Resources, who is also the sponsor of the competition, Chief Ikenna Okafor, performed the kick off ceremony, as 53 grassroots clubs are in contest to win one trophy.
Meanwhile, Citadel FC defeated Okporo United 3-2 in the opening match of the competition.
Speaking to sports journalists in Port Harcourt, shortly after the opening ceremony, Chief Okafor said engaging the youth in sporting activities is important to his organisation.
He stated that despite the Covid-19 outbreak, he still believe that the youth need to be engaged for them to deviate from nefarious activities.
According to him, he felt happy as he watched the grassroots football game, adding that his com-pany has also sponsored table tennis, swimming and golf tournaments in Rivers State.
“If I keep on sponsoring grassroots competitions in the country it will help to discover more and more talents that will represent the country in future games,” Okafor said.
He used the medium to call on corporate organisations to partner with state governments for development of sports, adding that government alone cannot do it.
The Managing Director, advised sports administrators to be considerate by not putting sponsorship deals high in any sports competition.
“If there is an enabling law that says money spent directly on sports will reduce various taxes, I think  that  will  also attract corporate bodies  to invest more money on sports to develop the economy,” he stated.
Chief Okafor, urged the participating teams to show sportsmanship during and after the competition.
