Volleyball: Nigeria U-19 Team Departs For Iran
The Nigeria U-19 Volleyball team departed for lran yesterday, the event is expected to hold from August 24 to September 4, 2021.
Nigeria, the African champions, are in Pool A, with hosts Iran, Poland and Guatemala.
Media Assistant to the Chairman, Caretaker Committee, Nigeria Volleyball Federation, Dare Kuti, confirmed to newsmen that the team would depart for Iran yesterday.
He said, “The country’s U-19 team will leave the country yesterday. A lot of work has been done and preparation is in full gear to ensure that the players give their best at the global stage.”
Meanwhile, head coach of the team, Sani Mohammed, announced the final 12-man list for the World Championships last Wednesday.
The team will be captained by Kano Pillars’ Michael Abari and assisted by Nasa Thunder’s Jerry Kinze.
Regulars like OFFA’s Abdulquadri Jaiyeola, COAS Spikers’ Vincent Mathias and NSCDC’s Ozokoye Pascal are on the list of players for the trip to Iran.
Mohammed stated that the team’s aim was to surpass their previous 14th position at the 2019 edition in Tunisia.
He said, “The boys are ready to make Nigeria proud at the FIVB World Championship. At the last World Championship, Nigeria finished 14th. This time, we want to improve on our performance.
“It is our prayer that the boys have an injury free tournament, play well and eventually get clubs to sign them after the championship.”
The Nigeria U19 players played against Kaduna selected and Abuja selected in their final friendly before the World Championship.
