Man Demands ‘Interest’ On Dowry From Estranged Wife
A Kaduna Sharia Court sitting in Magajim Gari, received a funny request from a husband facing divorce proceeding.
Abdullahi Mustapha demanded for the sum of N20,000 naira from his estranged wife, Asmau Muhammed, in exchange for her freedom.
Asmau had approached the Sharia Court to dissolve her 10 year old marriage through the Khul’I process, where a wife returns her dowry back to the husband, in order to be free from the marriage; but the husband Abdullahi Mustapha rejected the N20,000 dowry he paid on his wife 10 years ago, claiming that the amount will not be enough for him to marry another wife, stating further that times had changed, the naira had depreciated and the cost of marriages are high and as such he cannot accept the old dowry.
Asmau had earlier told the court that she did not want to disobey Allah by not being a submissive wife, hence she was ready to return the N20,000 dowry she received from her erstwhile husband, Abdullahi Mustapha.
The presiding judge, Murtala Nasir fixed August 9 for ruling on the matter.
