A former Permanent Secretary in Rivers State, Sir Mike Elechi, has backed the state government over the proposed Anti-Open Grazing Law in the state.
Speaking in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt, Elechi also stressed the need for an agency that would enforce the anti-grazing law.
He said the law is timely as it will help to check the incessant destructions of farmlands by herdsmen.
According to him, Governor Wike has taken the right steps to protect the agricultural economy of the state, adding that those going into cattle business should ranch them instead of allowing the animals to move around to destroy people’s farms.
“The governor has taken a nice step. It will save over agricultural economy from destruction.
“If we can buy land and fence our goats, why can’t they buy land for their cows.”
He said Governor Wike deserve commendation for the bold steps he has taken to save the economy of the state.
“Our economic means of survival being agriculture is gone.
“The governor deserves commendation for saving our people. Let the law take it own course since they don’t want to hear.
“The governor often means well for us, I sincerely commend him for this bold step taken to settle the issue that has been a trauma against our farmers including my humble self”.
