Pollution: Don Urges Sanctions Against Firms, Individuals

A lecturer in the department of geography and environment management, Kano State University, professor Emmanuel Oguzie has called for sanctions against those whose activities continuously pollutes the Niger Delta region.
Oguzie who said this in an exclusive interview with The Tide correspondent in Owerri, said that the only way to address the continuous pollution of the region is through sanctions.
He particularly said both multinational oil companies and individuals constituting to the pollution of the region should be made to pay for their actions.
Environmental issues need to be     everybody’s business. Reason being that we are all affected by it.
  “Niger Delta environmental degradation is abysmal and needs urgent government attention including stakeholders”.
The university don noted that the situation in the region is so grave that one cannot even ascertain whether the seafood is safe for human consumption.
According to him, even some mysterious illnesses in the region have been traced to the hydrocarbon pollution of the area.
“The situation has become major causes of illness and reduction of lifespan of the people”, he said, stressing that something must be done to address the situation.
