Disabled Computer Student Seeks Govt’s Support
A disabled computer science student in the Rivers State University (RSU), Mr John Akpelu, has called on the state government to come to his rescue to enable him complete his education.
Akpelu made the call in an exclusive chat with The Tide at the university’s premises, last week.
He also appealed to Emohua Local Government Chairman, Dr. Chidi Lloyd; Information and Communication Technology (ICT) companies, telecommunication companies and well meaning individuals to assist him financially.
He said that the call became imperative due to the urgent need to purchase textbooks and other learning materials as contained in the school bill.
The computer science student hinted that it had been a turbulent period for him financially since he gained admission, coupled with his condition as a disabled.
“Financially, it has not been easy since I gained admission. My condition is another factor which has posed a serious challenge to my studies. That’s why I need help from the Rivers State Government and the general public”, he said.
Apkelu disclosed that some spirited individuals were the brain behind his continued stay in the programme, adding however, that he now lacks the moral justification to contact the same people for assistance.
“If help does not come from anywhere, I may not be able to continue the programme. Academically, I am not poor, but when I recall my financial background, discouragement sets in”, he said.
He said that he was unable to reach out to disabled association for help due to his inability to move freely at will as occasioned by his disability.
Akpelu who is now a 400 level student with good academic records, appreciated his course mates and others in his department and faculty for their support towards his education.
