The Niger Delta Congress (NDC) has advised governors and leaders to form a security outfit Niger Delta Defence Force (NDDF) to curtail insecurity in the region.
In a statement, acting NDC President, Nubari Saatah, urged them to emulate the South-West and the South-East which have Amotekun and Ebube Agu, respectively.
The NDC suggested that the outfit recruits existing vigilantes and volunteers from every local government in the geopolitical zone. It called for a Niger Delta Defence Council (NDDC) to coordinate and oversee the process.
The NDC disclosed that it is proactively setting up a Niger Delta Security and Intelligence Gathering (ND SIGA) Unit as agreed by the stakeholders at the meeting of 15th May.
Saatah said it would be devastating to the region and Nigeria if the political leadership failed to act urgently.
The NDC warned that the people may resort to “different unorganised forms of self-help as tensions are high and palpable”.
“We urge members of the region to not mistake their economic bubble for a protective shell”, the statement added.
