A 400-level disabled student of Computer Science at the Rivers State University (RSU), Mr John Akpelu, has appealed to the Rivers State Government and the general public to assist him financially in his educational pursuit.
He expressed fear that his ambition to pursue higher education may hit the rocks if nobody comes to his rescue.
Akpelu disclosed this during an exclusive chat with The Tide at the university premises over the weekend.
He said that his appeal became necessary due to the urgent need to purchase textbooks and other learning materials as recommended by the school.
The Computer Science student, hinted that it had been a turbulent period for him financially since he gained admission into the university.
He recalled that his higher education would have stopped long time ago but for some good spirited individuals who assisted him financially, adding he now feels uncomfortable to contact same people on same subject matter.
“If help did not come from anywhere, I may not continue the programme. Academically, I am not poor, but when I recall my financial background, discouragement sets in”, he said.
Akpelu said his efforts to reach out to his local government Chairman, Hon Tom Eliezi, for assistance had consistently proved abortive.
While appreciating his course mates and others in the faculty/ department for their support so far, he appealed to the corporate organisations in the country, especially telecommunications and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) companies to assist him towards the completion of his programme in the school.
