On May 12, 2021, the 2021 inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame were announced and Nigerian Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti missed out.
The inductees are Jay Z, Foo Fighters, Carole King, Todd Rundgren, The Go-Go’s and Tina Turna. This marks heart break for Nigerians and Africans who get Fela into second behind Tina Turna in the fans ballot. Recall that on February 10, 2021, it was announced that the Nigerian legend would compete along side 15 other music legends including:
Mary J. Blige, Kate Bush, Devo, Foo Fighters, The Go-Gos, Iron Maiden, Jay Z, Chaka Khan, Carole King, LL Cool J, New York Dolls, Rage Against the Machine, Todd Rundgren, Tina Turna and Dionne Warwick.
The Tide gathered that inductees are chosen by an international voting body of more than 1000 artistes, historians, members and rock experts of the music industry starting in 2012, fans were given the privilege of participation until April 30, 2021, Fans can cast their votes for who they think should be inducted from the 2020 class. The top five artists in the fan’s ballot then get counted as single vote along side the 1000 plus other ballots. As it turns out, online voting never really counted for much.
