Coach Tasks Govt, Firms On Football Sponsorship
The newly appointed Coach of SKE Football club of Port Harcourt, Tonye Omulabo, has said that state governments and multi national companies in Nigeria are below average in terms of grassroots football competition sponsorship.
According to him, if adequate attention was given to the grassroots football in the country, no doubt, Nigeria will be the best in youth football.
Omulabo, made the assertion in a telephone interview with Tidesports yesterday, urging all Governments and private sectors to give proper attention to grassroots football.
He explained that Rivers State was also lagging behind in grassroots football competition and sponsorship, noting that competition is the best place to discover new talents.
“Grassroots football is nothing to write home about in Nigeria, not only in Rivers State but in the entire country.
“ I think if Government gives proper attention to grassroots football in States and hands over the administrative aspect to people that have good knowledge of the game, the youth will benefit more in the game,” Omulabo said.
The former Port Harcourt City Football Academy coach stated that Rivers State was expected to have different age-grade football clubs that can represent the state in different football competitions.
He commended the Governor, Nyesom Wike, for bringing back school sports, adding that school sports is one of the best ways to discover different age-grades in sporting events.
