Woman Accuses Police Anti-Kidnapping Unit Of Forced Abortion

A woman, Mrs Joy Godstime Ihunwo who was allegedly brutalised by men of Anti-Kidnapping unit in Rivers State says she has lost her three months pregnancy due to the torture and brutality she suffered in the hands of men of the Anti-kidnapping Unit of the State Police and want  justice  to prevail on the matter
In an interview with The Tide, the woman who wept uncontrollably said the scan result which was sighted by journalists, dated 10th April, 2021, showed that she had lost her pregnancy.
Mrs Ihunwo called on human rights advocates and well-meaning Nigerians to come to her aid and help her to fight the inhuman treatment meted on her by policemen.
According to her, while narrating her ordeal, she alleged that on Tuesday, April 6, 2021 while in her house men of anti-kidnapping unit came  and arrested her  husband who is the Chief Security Officer of Rumu-Elechi Community in Mile 3 Diobu, Port Harcourt, and that despite arresting her husband and some of his vigilante group members, the police officers allegedly broke into her room and beat her up with gun butt before whisking her away to their office alongside her husband and his workers.
Mrs Ihunwo disclosed that she was released later in the night that same day and brought back to the house by the men of anti-kidnapping unit after intervention of a rights group.
She also accused the unit of stealing her money, some other valuables and engaging in wanton destruction of property.
When contacted to speak on the matter, the police public relations officer in the State, SP Nnamdi Omoni declined to comment on the matter
Meanwhile, the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign has called on the police authorities to investigate the circumstances that led to the abortion of Mrs Ihunwo’s pregnancy by anti-kidnapping unit.
A lawyer with the group, Mrs Jane James, on behalf of the group called on the police authorities to ensure the matter was investigated, and added that justice must be done and seen to be done in the circumstance.
Our correspondent reports that some of the vigilante members who were arrested had been granted bail by the anti-kidnapping unit.
