The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, Amb Desmond Akawor, says the state Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, and other party bigwigs deserve awards for making the party formidable and popular in the state.
Akawor made the remarks when he played host to a pro-PDP group, labelled PDP Grassroots Youth and Masses Mobilization Movement (GY-M3), which gave him an award as “21st Century Diligence Service Political Icon”, in his office at the weekend.
The PDP chairman said it was Wike and others who deserve the award, not him, insisting that the various achievements recorded by the party in the state would not have been possible without the efforts of the governor.
As far as he was concerned, he was only a foot soldier and executor of the strategies put in place by the governor and other chieftains of the party.
According to him, “Let me, in an attempt to appreciate the award, tell you that I personally do not deserve to receive the award. The award can only be given to the man who has worked hard. The governor of the state is our salesman and whenever he goes to the field to campaign, we are not only using his achievements but his words to campaign.”
He named others who deserve the award to include the state deputy governor, the House speaker, secretary to the state government, and the immediate past chairman of the PDP in the state.
While thanking the group for monitoring the just-concluded local government elections, Akawor harped on the importance of non-governmental organisations in the mobilisation and sensitisation of the grassroots for elections.
Earlier, the Director General of the PDP Grassroots Youth and Masses Mobilization Movement, Prince Felix Ihonre, had said they were at the party secretariat to confer on the PDP chairman the political icon award.
Ihonre said the group decided to honour the governor with the award after a decade of careful studying and monitoring and evaluation of his political life and achievements.
