Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has deployed newly recruited female water guards to secure 37 jetties and terminals in the state.
LASWA, in a statement made available to newsmen, said the development was to ensure efficient operations.
General Manager, LAS-WA, Oluwadamilola Emman-uel, who disclosed this, said the jetties had insufficient personnel.
He said the guards underwent series of training in basic waterway safety, jetty operational procedures and conflict resolution.
“They have been equipped to ensure adequate safety compliance by boat operators and ferry passengers on the waterways and at jetties,” he said.
The statement added that the personnel were posted to the Odo Agemo jetty in Egan Igando area, Isashi jetty, off Iyana school and Ojo Iyana Iba jetty.
Other places under deployment by the Authority include Mile 2 Ferry Terminal near Mile 2 Bus stop, Imore jetty off Alakija Bus stop and Ebute Chief jetty in Epe, among others.
LASWA said that the agency had a total of 108 water guards manning 37 jetties and terminals.
The LASWA boss commended the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his commitment to improve water transportation in the state.
