The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it would expand polling units in Cross River State so as to enhance more voters’ participation.
INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in the State, Dr. Emmanuel Alex Hart, made this known in Calabar during the opening ceremony of the workshop on implementation of expansion of voters’ access to poling units, organised for Electoral Officers (EOS), Assistant Electoral Officers (AEOs) and Registration Area/Enumeration Area Demarcation Officers (RA/EADs).
He restated the Commission’s commitment to the people of the state for credible and transparent elections.
The REC further explained that the training was to equip the staff on strategies to implement voters’ access to polling units.
According to him, “the expansion of polling units, which is meant to convert the existing voting points in the country to full-fledged polling units, will enhance more voters’ participation, thereby reducing voters’ apathy in the electoral process.”
The REC expressed gratitude to the Commission and stakeholders who gave overwhelming support to the policy which he believed would solve the problem of overcrowding of polling units.
Hart prayed for a successful execution of the policy and hoped it would bring to an end the challenges currently experienced in the electoral processes such as overcrowding, social distancing, long queues, violence, amongst others.
