Less than 24 hours to the closing ceremony of the 20th edition of the National Sports Festival, Edo 2020, the fracas, antics, manipulations and outright intimidation, especially, by Team Edo and their supporters have continued to cast huge question mark on the integrity of the games.
Yesterday at the Cultural Centre, venue of the boxing event, hell was let loose during a fight between Lagos and Ogun States.
Fans at the venue clashed as the declared result of the fight did not reflect what the fans witnessed.
Tables and chairs were used to scatter the ring, while officials ran for cover.
It took security operatives some time to restore order before competition could resume more than two hours later.
However, the most appalling development of the day was the robbery of Godwin of Rivers, who won his semi final fight on Sunday only to discover that his conquered opponent from Ondo was slated to appear in the fight for gold to the chagrin of his coach and Team Rivers officials.
It was later learnt that the fight was awarded to the loser after competition had ended on Sunday.
Team Rivers boxing coach vowed to protest the development.
Earlier in the day, there was crisis and fight at the football final women where Team Edo supporters and officials tried their best to intimidate and harass Lagos. Edo eventually won the final 1-0 but the men’s final between the same states almost failed to hold as Lagos refused to come out for the game because of what happened to their women counterpart.
Lagos was eventually persuaded to play.
Team Edo’s petulance and win at all cost attitude have been apparent from onset as they strived to overthrow Delta State.
