The Rotary Club of Port Harcourt has handed over two Covid-19 sample collection kiosks and other supplies to the Rivers State Government.
In an address during the handover ceremony in Port Harcourt yesterday, the President of the club, Rtn Adeolu Okanlawon, enjoined Rivers people to continue to adhere to measures outlined by the government in the interest of their personal safety, as well as join the campaign of inceasing the immunity of the critical mass by taking Covid-19 vaccines and preaching same to “our friends, families and neighbours”.
“Talking about vaccines, “as Rotary, we bear testimony that vaccines save lives because with it (working with our global partners), we have succeeded in eradicating Polio from Nigeria and by extension, Africa and the world, save for some few countries in Asia”, he said.
Okanlawon further indicated that as it is for Polio, Covid-19 vaccines will help you and I to stay stronger and beat the odds,” contending that as immunity against and safety from Covid-19 increases via a combination of measures, and a gradual return of normalcy as a result, culminating in an increased demand for testing for many citizens of the state, the club through funding from District 9141, constructed and donated to the state government the two Covid-19 sample collection kiosks to enable health workers carry out their work safely and more effectively.
He said the club has also provided medical oxygen for intensive care support and other consumables and supplies for caring for Covid-19 patients at treatment centres in the state.
Okanlawon applauded health workers in the state, whom he described as ‘the heroes of our survival’ for putting their lives on the line for the safety of the people.
“By their heroic actions, 2,758 citizens of our state have been treated and fully recovered after coming down with Covid-19,” he said.
According to him, the kiosks were designed in Rumuogba and built at Trans Amadi in keeping with the club’s goal of developing the local economies in the state.
In his response, the State Commissioner for Health, Prof Princewill Chike thanked Rotary Club of Port Harcourt for the kind gesture and for supporting and helping the state government in the fight against Covid-19, Polio and other diseases.
