The Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has fired the state Commissioner for Environment, Dr Igbiks Tamuno.
A statement signed by the Special Assistant (Media) to the Rivers State Governor, Kelvin Ebiri, yesterday, said, the governor directed the sacked commissioner to submit all government documents and properties in his possession to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment.
Although no reason was given for Tamuno’s firing, The Tide learnt that the commissioner, who was presiding over a media conference on soot and air quality in the state at the Ministry of Justice Auditorium, rushed out of the briefing after receiving an emergency phone call, and asked his Permanent Secretary to hold fort.
He had concluded his speech and was fielding questions from participants shortly before the phone call.
Journalists, including The Tide Reporter, some civil society leaders, and other stakeholders, who were participating in the press conference, were stunned when the commissioner, immediately after receiving the phone call, disappeared from the venue of the well-publicised media briefing.
