Union Condemns Continuous Detention Of Boat Driver

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has frowned at the continued detention of a boat driver (name withheld) that was arrested five days ago by the Police for alleged breach of the maritime laws.
The union urged the Police to charge the suspect to court instead of detaining him unlawfully without trial.
Chairman, MWUN, Rivers State Chapter, Comrade Jonah Jumbo, who made the position of the union known, argued that if a boat driver disobeys the law or acts contrary to the rules of engagement, the police authority has the right to charge such defaulter to court rather than detain him unnecessarily.
Comrade Jumbo, however, appealed to drivers to desist from acts capable of tarnishing the image of the union by obeying rules and regulations guiding their operations.
He admonished boat operators to desist from over speeding and over loading, as well as adhere to the rule of wearing life jackets before embarking on a water journey to avoid mishap.
He also appealed to unregistered boat drivers in the state to register with the union to avoid embarrassment from security operatives.
Meanwhile, Jumbo has urged the Police and other security agents to ensure the safety of lives and property on the creeks and waterways.
