The Rivers State House of Assembly has commended the state Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) over its readiness to conduct next month’s Local Government Election.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Agencies and Commissions, Hon Nathaniel Uwaji, made the commendation, yesterday, when the committee went on oversight function to the electoral umpire at its Aba Road office.
He expressed confidence that the commission would do well, and advised them to continue the good work.
On his part, the Chairman of RSIEC, Justice George Omereji (rtd) said the commission was 95 per cent ready to conduct a hitch-free election.
Omereji said the commission has done enough sensitisation of the electorate, adding that already, sensitive materials were in place.
On the lingering APC issue, the chairman said though he has received a letter from the APC on their decision not to participate in the election, the commission has prepared for all political parties, adding that those that would participate be free to exercise their franchise.
Justice Omereji also said that the withdrawal of the APC, would not affect preparations for the election as it is preparing for the other political parties.
In addition, he said some staff and ad-hoc staff have been trained for the forthcoming poll.
He urged all Rivers residents to come and vote, assuring that their votes would count.
Members of the committee include, Hon Sam Ogeh, Hon Prince Nwanaka Okpokiri, Hon Lolo Isaiah Opuende, Hon Prince Ngbor, and Hon Ahiakwo Christian.
