Rivers Angels Miss Golden Opportunity To Top League
Rivers Angels FC has missed an opportunity to lead the league table as Dream Star Ladies FC of Lagos forced them to a 1-1 draw in one of the Week 9 fixtures of the Nigeria Women Football league (NWFL) Premiership decided at the Agege Stadium last Thursday.
The match which seemed to be unexpected for the Angels saw Favour Kalu scored for the hosts in the 22nd minute but Deborah Abiodun rescued a point for the Jewel of Rivers in the 85th minute to preserve their unbeaten start to the season but left to rue two points dropped in the end.
Angels star, Vivian Ikechukwu while speaking with Rivers Angels media, expressed her disappointment with the final result.
According to the forward, they might have underrated Dream Star and they paid for it by conceding in the first half.
“I’m not happy because this was a golden opportunity for us to have topped the league but that didn’t happen,” Ikechukwu stated.
“This wasn’t the result we expected because when Bayelsa drew yesterday, we were hoping to pick all three points today.
“We underrated our opponents and when they scored, that destabilised us.
“We spoke to ourselves during halftime and that was why we played better in the second half and levelled up,” she added.
On her part, Rivers Angels Captain, Catherine Kenneth believes last Thursday’s game should have been an outright win for her side but will still accept the one point gained.
“I will not say that I’m disappointed with the result but this was a game we were supposed to win,” she said.
“We did not eventually lose all points so I’m still thankful for the outcome of the game.
“Yes this was a chance for us but that wasn’t so,” Kenneth said.
Rivers Angels are still a point behind Bayelsa Queens and will next play another Lagos side, FC Robo at the Legacy pitch on Matchday 10.
