‘Collaboration Amongst Professionals ’ ll Help Reduce Building Collapse’
To halt building collapse and reduce substandard building construction practices in the country, Builders and other professionals in the building industry must be engaged in building management and processes.
The National President of Estate Surveyors and Valuers, Chief Emma Okas Wike, who stated this at the Builders Week last week in Port Harcourt emphasised the need for team work in building processes
Wike admitted that there were missing links in the value system which often caused building collapse, adding that if such gaps were closed, by engaging professionals, there would be a drastic change.
According to him, “ there is a missing link in our value system which is partly or wholly responsible for incessant building collapse in Nigeria. The missing link undoubtedly is found in the deliberate or otherwise attempt to sideline professionalism in the process of buildings”.
“Professionals have the skills to harmonize the components of the design to produce buildings that would endure. Once constructed, a building is expected to be in use for a very long time. That is why a building should be properly constructed. And for a building to be properly constructed, professionals must or ought to be in charge”, he said.
He appreciated the relationship between Estate Surveyors and Valuers and NIOB and assured of a closer collaboration.
“ ESAV are committed to continuous closer collaboration with your profession, particularly in the areas of Knowledge Sharing”.
He seized the opportunity to call on sister professional bodies to support the efforts of the Builders in curbing the frequency of building collapse in Nigeria.
The National President of ESAV regretted that the magnitude and the frequency of building collapse across the major cities of Nigeria are alarming and worrisome, stressing that lives and property worth several billions of Naira have been lost to the collapse of building structures.
Wike further explained that incessant collapse of buildings have serious consequences of serious causes and there would be incidents of more devastating challenges in future if stringent measures are not applied to curb the menace.
