Sri Lanka’s President To Take Action After Probe Into 2019 Easter Bombings
Sri Lanka’s President has vowed to take action against all those responsible for the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings which left over 270 dead, and those who failed to prevent the attacks.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa declared yesterday that he would fully implement recommendations by the Presidential Commission that investigated the Easter bombings and handed over its report this week.
Rajapaksa who addressed the country during the independence day celebrations said: “Action will be taken against all parties involved in this tragedy.
“We will not allow those responsible for designing and enabling this tragedy to escape justice.
“We will never allow extremism to raise its head again in this country.”
The bombings which targeted three churches during Easter Sunday services in 2019 has been blamed on Muslim extremists.
Three luxury hotels were also hit in simultaneous attacks on April 21.
Former President Maithripala Sirisena, was questioned by the Presidential Commission on his failure to act on advance warnings by foreign countries regarding a possible attack by Muslim
Others questioned for their failure to act on the warning were ex-Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, the former Defence Secretary and the ex-police chief.
Several senior police officers were also questioned by the commission regarding their failure to prevent suicide bomb attacks in seven locations including the churches.
At least 60 persons are in custody over the bombings.
The findings and recommendations of the commission have not been made public, but a special cabinet meeting has been called for February 8 to discuss the report.
