INEC To Upgrade Voting Points To Polling Units
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Rivers State, has announced plans to expand existing voting points and upgrade some of them to full-fledged polling units.
The plans to convert the existing voting points and settlements in the country to full-fledged polling units are to improve elections and the voting process.
In a statement, yesterday, the Public Affairs Officer of INEC in Rivers State, Geraldine Ekelemu, said that the plan was to expand access to polling units and decongest existing polling units clustered in some locations.
The statement revealed that already, the commission was holding national consultations with various stakeholders, which would also trickle down to the state and local government levels on modalities of relocating some of the voting points.
It stressed that, “these processes will be comprehensive enough to take care of the interest of all voters and communities”.
In this light, it urged those who want to call for the creation of polling units to desist as INEC was already updated with data and details of all the polling units that have passed the threshold and were qualified to be given consideration.
It urged unsuspecting members of the public to be wary of dubious politicians who may demand money for the creation of new polling units.
The commission insisted that it has all data, and cannot be influenced by selfish politicians, as it was poised to do the right thing for the smooth conduct of elections.
