A 100-level female student of the Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Rumuola, Port Harcourt in Rivers State, Miss Precious Woko, has demanded the sum of N30million compensation from the authorities of the Nigeria Police Force for the alleged killing of her late elder brother, Godspower Eze Woko by operatives of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in February, 2017, at Omoku in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of the state.
Woko said although the amount demanded cannot equate the life lost, it would cushion the negative effects of the death of her elder brother in the family, and as well take care of his bereaved wife and two children.
She made this demand when she appeared at the resumed sitting of the state Commission of Inquiry into the Alleged Acts of Violence, Torture, Brutality, Murder and Violation of the Fundamental Rights of Citizens committed by officers, men and operatives of the Nigerian police Force in the state, last Wednesday, in Port Harcourt.
According to her, on February 9, 2017, her late elder brother left for their uncle’s house few metres away from their compound in Omoku in ONELGA, only to be shot 10 minutes after by operatives of the defunct SARS for no just cause, adding that the victim was running away from the uncle’s house when they had sporadic gun shots by armed SARS men who had invaded the area in search of some hoodlums.
She told members of the panel that the operatives of the defunct SARS shot her late brother on his bum, which resulted to his death few minutes after.
“My late brother did nothing that would warrant his killing by the SARS. We were sitting in the house when my uncle asked him to come and see him for discussion. Few minutes later, we had gun shots. While he was running for safety, they shot him, and he died at the spot. They took him to Erema General Hospital Mortuary where his lifeless body was deposited”, she added.
The 100-level student of Department of Business Management at the Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Port Harcourt, further appealed to the commission to ensure that justice was served in the matter, adding that the police did not deny killing her elder brother when the matter was reported to police.
