CAFCC: Aguda, Omoniwari Move Rivers United To Next Stage
A brace from Godwin Aguda and a goal from Fortune Omoniwari sealed Rivers United’s passage into the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup on Saturday.
Prior to Saturday’s match, Rivers United defeated Bloemfontein Celtics 2- 0 in their own backyard back in December 2020.
With a 5-0 on aggregate over the South African, Rivers United has now recorded Nigeria’s biggest win ever in the competition.
In his post-match reaction, Eguma insisted that his team hadn’t won anything and was is not the time for celebration.
“Now is not the time for celebration because we still have a game to play to reach the next round,” he told the media.
Rivers United has been paired against local rivals, Enyimba of Aba in the next round of the competition and the winner of the two-legged match will pick a ticket to the lucrative group stage of the competition.
Eguma admitted that the Aba Elephants are more exposed than his team on the continent, but he insisted, all that we count for nothing on the pitch.
“The game against Enyimba is more of like a game with a known foe because they are Nigerian side.”
“We know each other very well; we have met several times in the league, but this, we will play in the continent.”
“It is going to be a cracker, because of what is involved, only one team can qualify for the group stage.”
“We are not underrating them, because Enyimba have a lot of experience on the continent and they understand the terrain than us, but Rivers United is more than determined to succeed and it’s a game that can go either way,” he said.
