Barring any last minute change in decision, water producers in Rivers State may increase the prices of their products.
This decision was reached at a meeting organised by Water Producers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN) Rivers State chapter, in Port Harcourt.
Public Relations Officer of the association, Kingsley Okogbo, told The Tide in an interview that the new price which will come into effect any moment from now is based on the high cost of raw materials for production of water.
According to him, a bag of sachet water which used to sell at N120, will now sell at N200.
He said the meeting also discussed the proliferation of water producers in the State, adding that the situation is affecting the quality of water in the state.
According to him, the association has resolved to meet with the National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to discuss ways of ensuring standardisation in water production.
“Basically, the meeting was called to look at the issues affecting the water industry in Rivers State.
For instance, the issue of price increase for table water and the standard of water production in Rivers State.
“Owing to the high cost of raw materials, the association, in conjunction with other Associations in the water industry will review upward the price of table water.
“We also want to meet with NAFDAC to discuss the issue of entry into the industry” he said.
Earlier, National President, Mr Odiri Macson, said the water industry in Rivers State is being infiltrated by quacks.
