The Asistant Coach in Rivers State Weightlifting Association, Eghosa Emmanuel has appealed to the state government, well-meaning individuals and corperate organisations to assist weightlifters in the state.
He stated that weightlifting is one of the difficult sports and as such one must be mentally and physically fit before you can do it.
Emmanuel made the appeal on Monday, in an exclusive interview with Tidesports after a training session in Port Harcourt.
According to him, the athletes are expected to also feed well before going into training session and competitions as the case maybe.
“The state athletes are going through hardship. We need help, weightlifting is not like other sports that you can do without proper feeding.
“As you can see, we are training for the  forthcoming National Sports Festival (NSF), tagged ‘EDO State 2020’ expected to hold this year in Edo State.
“My athletes are not happy because after training nothing to eat or go home with, in form of stipend,” Emmanuel said.
He explained that before the lockdown his athletes were well prepared for the festival and determined to win medals for the state.
“My lifters are back on training after they lifted the ban on sporting activities, but yet to find their fit,” he stated.
He noted that weightlifting is one sport that always makes the state proud in NSF.
“In every sports festival weightlifting usually win seven to eight medals in different categories,” he added.
