MWUN Wants More Investment In Maritime Sector
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN , Rivers State chapter, has called for more investment in the maritime sector to reduce unemployment among the youth in the Niger Delta region of the country.
The Union also called for regular training of seafarers to minimise accidents on water ways.
The State Chairman of the Union, Comrade Jonah Jumbo made the call at the Union’s congress held to elect the Bille chapter of the union executive in Bille Town in Degema Local Government Area of the state.
Jumbo, who described maritime’s sector as a critical one that can employ over sixty percent of Niger Deltas youths said the negligence of maritime sector in the region resulted to huge criminal activities and social vices in the region.
He called on government at all levels to invest in the maritime sector to empower youths in the region.
He also called on the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to train seafarers in the region to have competent indigenous seafarers in the region.
Jumbo accused NIMASA of not providing jobs for competent indigenous maritime scholars in the region.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State chairman of the Maritime Workers Union, Comrade Jonah Jumbo has charged the newly elected Executive of the Bille chapter to upgrade maritime sector in the area.
He said, “ Today you are elected as new executive to pilot the affairs of the Union in this area, please use the available resources at your disposal to upgrade maritime sector in this area.
“Make sure all members of the Union are carried along in the scheme of things, work for the unity of the Union, that is the only way you can achieve something meaningful in your administration.”
The state chairman thanked members of the Union in the area for peaceful and credible election.
He also thanked Bille Council of Chiefs for providing a conductive and secured environment for the election.
The chairmanship which was keenly contested by three members had Dumo Warigbani reelected.
In his acceptance speech, the reelected chairman_Dumo Warigbani promised to consolidate on his effective welfare package of the union’s members and appealed to all contestants to partner with him to drive his vision as he promised to accommodate everyone in his administration.
