Abia Lawmaker Distributes Food Items To Indigent Nursing Mothers
A lawmaker, Mr Chijioke Chukwu (APC), representing Bende North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, yesterday commenced the distribution of food items to indigent persons, including nursing mothers, in his constituency.
Speaking while handing over the items to traditional rulers of the benefitting communities in Ugwueke, Bende Local Government Area, Chukwu said that the palliatives were his own quota to ameliorate the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on the people.
He said: “We appreciate the sufferings of our people on account of the lockdown occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We know that many of our people are traders but the lockdown has made it very difficult for them to attend to their businesses.
“A lot of families are finding it extremely challenging to feed at this critical time.
“This is why we have come up with these palliatives as our own contribution to reduce the impact of the lockdown on you.
“This will be done periodically. This is the launch and it will also be done in Bende and Item. We shall also do empowerment after the lockdown.”
The lawmaker appealed to other prominent and wealthy people from the area to extend some kind gestures in cash and material, especially to the indigent in their midst, during the lockdown.
He said that he would constitute a committee to coordinate donations from other kind-spirited people for distribution to the underprivileged in the constituency.
In an interview with newsmen on the sideline, Chukwu said that he carried out a Needs Assessment to determine the strata of the society that needed the emergency intervention.
