The Commissioner for Water Resources and Rural Development, Dr. Tamunosisi Gogo-Jaja says the state government will not stop the digging of borehole but rather regulate owners and guide on how to own one.
Gogo-Jaja told The Tide in a chat that the aim was to ensure that safety guidelines are followed.
“One of such is to ensure that they must observe the distance between septic tank
and any borehole to prevent water contamination. We want to ensure they observe the rule to prevent waste water seeping into the borehole”, he added.
Gogo-Jaja has also visited Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area in accompany of the permanent secretary, and a director in the ministry, as well as the general manager, Rivers State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, to assess the extent of work on water projects in the area.

The commissioner and his team visited Kalaibiama, Opobo Town, Iloma and Nkoro, where they met with the contractors to know first-hand the level of work and challenges they were facing.
He said: ”We know the importance of water in our communities and as the commissioner for water resources; it will not be a good one if I sit idly and allow a project of this magnitude to be delayed”.
In response, the contractors told the commissioner and his team that they were working tirelessly to deliver the projects, adding that they were test running the system.
