Tennis Captain Calls For Grassroots Sports Dev
Captain of All Stars Tennis Club of Port Harcourt, Minayo Igani, has called on the state government to pay more attention to grassroots sports development.
He explained that going to the grassroots to discover young talents, would help to develop sports generally in the state, as they will replace the aging athletes.
Igani, who was also the chairman of defunct Sharks Supporters Club of Port Harcourt said this in an exclusive interview with Tidesports, at the tennis court, Old Port Harcourt Township, over the weekend.
According to him, he is one of the advocates of grassroots sports development.
“When it comes to grassroots, I keep making compassionate appeal that we must go back to our grassroots if we want to get things right.
Until we go back to our grassroots, we cannot get things right. Why we are getting things wrong it is because we have failed to recognize our grassroots sports development.
He noted that most of the notable players in Nigeria were discovered through grassroots tournaments, saying that the likes of Hamilton Green, Orufeetc in Port Harcourt, were all discovered from the rural areas.
Igani, noted that sports is a catalyst to develop sound minds through mental and physical activities, saying that sports deserved to give more attention as education, as it promote and develop any given nation.
