Parties’ Deregistration: Rivers IPAC Hails Court Ruling
The Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Rivers State has hailed the recent Abuja High Court ruling against deregistration of political parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
The chairman of the State’s IPAC, Chima Nsirim, who reacted after a meeting of the IPAC in Port Harcourt, described the stopping of INEC from deleting 74 political parties from its register as justice for the people.
According to him, INEC’s action was not in line with the constitution of Nigeria, saying that the deregistration of political parties should not be done to the detriment of the people.
He said INEC acted in hurry and without due process, saying that INEC can not claim to be deregistering political parties on the excuse that the parties did not meet the requirements in the last 2019 elections when over 33 political parties were ready to be registered by INEC recently.
“INEC actually acted in hurry and unfair to political parties. The normal procedures should be taken and not in hasty decision. All of a sudden INEC disregistered 74 political parties to deny millions of Nigerians choices of political parties. It’s not acceptable.” Nsirim Said.
On the meeting, the IPAC chairman said the gathering was also to accord honour to Chief Felix Obuah, a former chairman of IPAC in the state in respect of the traditional tile given to him recently.
He sad IPAC also found it worthy to congratulate him on the chieftaincy stool given to him by his people.
