A bill for an Act to establish the Federal University of Environment Technology in Ogoniland, Rivers State has passed second reading on the floor of the Senate, just as it has received huge support by Senators.
Sponsor of the bill and the Senator Representing the Rivers South-East District in the National Assembly, Senator Barinada Mpigi said if approved by the Senate, the university will be established in Saakpenwa, Tai Local Government Area of Rivers.
Mpigi stated this in a statement issued by his media aide, Joseph Gwezia and made available to The Tide in Port Harcourt, yesterday.
The statement further said Senator Mpigi explained that setting up the Federal University of Environment Technology in Ogoni land would provide the manpower needed to tackle the environmental degradation caused by years of oil exploration and exploitation there.
He said Senator Mpigi is soliciting the support of his colleagues to ensure that the bill is passed into Law to pave the way for the specialized university to come to fruition, noting that if established, would be the first in Africa.
The statement said that Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, Senator Barau Jibrin, in his contribution said the university would also train professionals who would tackle the erosion problems in the South-East part of the country and desertification in the North.
Also in his contribution, Senator Ibikunle Amosun said the university would help in protecting environmental challenges, reduce youth restiveness in the Niger Delta and the country in general.
Mpigi’s media aide said the bill is part of the commitment of his principal towards the sustainable development of Ogoni, Rivers State and the entire Niger Delta region.
