Highlife Legend, Victor Olaiya Dies At 89
One of Nigeria’s highlife music legends, Sir Victor Olaiya has passed on in Lagos, aged 89 years, after a brief illness. Olaiya whose music has continued to attract both old and young artistes died at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) on Wednesday.
The deceased who celebrated his 89th birthday last December, was confirmed dead by the Managing Director (MD) of Evergreen Music Company Limited, Bimbo Esho.
It is no exaggeration that many Nigerians still prefer to listen to music tracks by legends like Victor Olaiya. Their tracks were enriched with educative Iyrics and beats that make you feel the gentle movement of the breeze and shake your head without caring who is watching.
It is sad that Nigerian music industry lost one of the best and probably the last from his time. When the late musician was interviewed in 2013 after his collaboration with 2 baba on the single ‘Baby MI Da” Baby Jowo) he said “most of my contemporaries no longer exist, the chances of collaborating with them are cancelled”.
