RSU Gets NUC Approval To Begin Medicine, Nursing Sciences
Efforts by the Rivers State Government to advance manpower in Medicine and related disciplines has received a huge boost, following approval by the National Universities Commission (NUC) for the Rivers State University (RSU) to undertake undergraduate courses in Medicine and Nursing Sciences.
The state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Pastor Paulinus Nsirim disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Port Harcourt.
Nsirim explained that the approval came on the heels of a successful resource assessment of the College of Medical Sciences, Teaching Hospital and the Department of Nursing Sciences by the NUC in 2019.
The statement titled, “RSU bags NUC approval to undertake undergraduate courses in Medicine and Nursing Sciences”, reads, “The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted the Rivers State University (RSU) approval to undertake full-time undergraduate programmes from the 2019/2020 Academic Session in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) and Nursing Sciences (BNsc).
“The approval came after a successful resource assessment of the College of Medical Sciences, Teaching Hospital and the Department of Nursing Sciences in November, last year.”
The Tide recalls that Governor Nyesom Wike had upgraded the Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital (BMSH) to the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) during his first tenure in office, saying the facility would serve as a teaching hospital for the RSU.
Following the upgrade, the governor embarked on massive rehabilitation of facilities and infrastructure there, including the acquisition of modern equipment for the teaching hospital.
