A Jos Upper Area Court 3, sitting in Kasuwan Nama, yesterday  sentenced a 42-year-old driver, Usaini Ahmedu, to five years imprisonment for cheating and criminal breach of trust.
The Judge, Suleiman Lawal, convicted Ahmedu, after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of cheating and criminal breach of trust.
Lawal, however, gave Ahmedu options of N150,000 fine for cheating and N20, 000 fine for breach of trust.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Ibrahim Gokwat, had told the court that the Complainant, Suleiman Ahmed, who resides at No 4, Alikazawre Jos, reported the case on September 4, 2019 at the Laranto Divisional Police Station.
Gokwat said that the complainant said that he entrusted his Ford bus in care of Ahmedu to use for commercial purpose and was expected to remit N25,000 weekly to him.
He said that the defendant only remitted the said sum for five weeks and since then stopped remitting money and absconded.
“During police investigation, the defendant admitted to have failed to remit the agreed amount and to have absconded,” Gokwat said.
According to him, the offences contravene Sections 296 and 306 and punishable under Sections 297 and 307 of the Plateau State Penal Code.
