Mpigi Pushes For Environment Varsity In Ogoniland
As part of his effort to address the environmental challenges in Ogoniland, the Senator representing Rivers South East in the National Assembly, Senator Barry Mpigi has sponsored a bill for the establishment of a federal university in the area.
A statement by Mpigi’s media aide, Joseph Gwezia and obtained by The Tide said ‘a bill for an act to provide for the establishment of the Federal University of Environmental Technology, Saakpenwa, Tai in Ogoni, has been read for the first time on the floor of the Senate.’
The statement further said: “the bill, cited as Federal University of Environmental Technology Saakpenwa in Tai Ogoni, Rivers State (Establishment, etc) Bill, 2019 (SB. 200) is sponsored by Distinguished Senator Barinada Mpigi representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District.”
It said when finally passed, the bill shall among other things prepare global experts that have excellent theoretical knowledge, practical skills and experience in basic natural scientific disciplines and related fields of engineering with operational competencies and knowledge in environment protection, managing ecological and climate change problems.
The statement further said Senator Mpigi was of the firm belief that the establishment of the Federal University in Ogoni shall greatly help in training manpower.
It further said its passage would also assuage the environmental problems of the people of Ogoni in particular and the Niger Delta in general as well as boost the development of the area.
