Our Plan To Revamp Health Sector, On Course, Banigo Assures
The Rivers State Deputy Governor, Dr. Ipalibo Harry Banigo, says the vision to revamp the health sector in the state remains on course.
The deputy governor stated this while declaring open the 3rd Annual Scientific Conference of the Association of Female Medical Laboratory Scientist of Nigeria in Port Harcourt.
Represented by her Senior Special Assistant, Barrister Inegogo Fubara, Banigo said the construction of the Mother and Child Hospital, renovation of the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, construction of general hospitals, construction of model health centres and the equipping of the Radiology Laboratory of the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital were all deliberate efforts by the state Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike to provide the people of the state with a quality and affordable healthcare system.
The deputy governor, who said that she was passionate about protecting the girl child, noted that it was on that premise that she founded the Protect the Girl Child Initiative in the Office of Deputy Governor to mentor young girls on the various challenges they may be confronted with.
“It is no gainsaying that the girl child in our society today is a vulnerable gender and need as much support as she can get to thrive in the society”, Banigo stressed.
Banigo, who commended the association for the good work they were doing in promoting the health of young girls and women in the country, thanked them for choosing Rivers State to host the 3rd National Conference of the association.
In his remarks, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani, said as legislators in the state, they have passed several bills that deal with universal health coverage.
Earlier, the National President of the Association of Female Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, Dr. Lawrena Chinyere Okoro, had said one of the most striking imbalance of power between men and women was violence against women, which according to her, leaves a long term effect on the women’s physical and mental health.
