Flood: Part Of Niger Delta May Sink In 30 Years – Expert
There is looming submergence of some coastal communities in Niger Delta if the current flood continues.
Professor of Geodesy and tradional ruler , Alabo ( Prof) Dagogo Fubara in an exclusive interview with The Tide has warned that in the next 30years many coastal communities may disappear if the current flood menace continues.
He said, “ considering the level of the high tide we lose about 30 centimetres and most of these communities are lying below sea level.”
Fubara who championed embankment and shore protection of most coastal communities in the delta said natural causes are to be blamed as climate change plays huge role in the current scenario.
“ If the climate change continues very soon we will be losing not less than 30 centimetres of land” Fubara said, “ and most of our low level areas will be under water”.
He revealed that high tide occurs twice in a year and most times usually between October and November.
In his words “ its the position of the earth, sun and the moon that causes high tide. If they are in a straight line we have spring tide but when the moon, sun are on one side and the earth is on one side we have astronomical spring tide which we are seeing today.”
The emeritus professor and former Director of Institute of Geoscience and Space Technology at the Rivers State University called on government to ensure that a fresh shore protection are done to protect most of the affected communities to check the menace.
He further advised the citizenry to keep away from water paths and ensure that all drains and outlets are maintained.
