UNICEF Spends N2.4bn In Plateau In Five Years

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says it has spent over N2.4 billion to support various projects and programmes in Plateau State in the last five years.
UNICEF’s Chief of Field Office in Bauchi, Mr Bhanu Pathak, disclosed this when he led other officials of the fund on a courtesy visit to Governor Simon Lalong yesterday in Jos.
According to Pathak, the monies were channelled into education, health, nutrition, water supply and sanitation as well as child protection.
“Your Excellency, as you know, UNICEF is basically working to protect the rights of women and children and our major concern is to ensure that such category of people have access to basic social amenities.
“We have spent N2.4 billion to support programmes and projects in the last five years to promote the well being of women and children in Plateau.
“These monies were spent in the health, education, water and sanitation, child protection and the nutrition sectors in the state,” he said.
Pathak also said that the fund had provided supplies worth N185 million to the state in the last five years, adding that more support was underway.
He commended the State Government for collaborating with UNICEF to provide social amenities to its citizens, particularly those at the rural levels.
He, however, called on the state government to ensure prompt payment of counterpart funding to enable more projects to come to the state through UNICEF.
