Activist Wants Protection Of Girl Child’s Rights
A rights activist, Nale Lekia Curt, Nwanikpo has called for better programmes and policies to give due advantage to the girl child to develop their fullest potentials for growth and positive impact on society.
The activist, who spoke with The Tide in Bori, headquarters of Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, during the celebration of the 2019 edition of the International Day of the Girl Child, stressed the need for effective legislation and enforcement of the rights of the girl child to protect them from abuses and vulnerability.
She noted that some cultural practices in most communities were discriminatory to the girl child and undermine the full harnessing of their potentials for deve-lopment.
She called on the government and other stakeholders to give priority attention to the educational development of the girl child for them to be more beneficial to themselves and the society.
She said; “Parents should not undermine the potentials of their girl child, gone are those days when the girl child was relegated to the background, equal opportunities should be given to them, their rights have to be protected by laws and enforcement of such laws.”
The activist, who is also the wife of the leader of Khana Legislative Assembly, called for more awareness at the grassroots to sensitise the people on the need to stop cultural practices that dehumanise the girl child.
