As the move against suspected criminals in parts of the state tightens, about 158 suspected cultists have surrendered their arms in Omudioga in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State.
This was revealed in an exclusive chat with the Community Development Chairman (CDC), Omudioga, Barrister Chikwere Emeka-Ogbugo, at the weekend.
Emeka-Ogbugo recalled that the community had been bedeviled with cult activities such as kidnapping, armed robbery and others.
He pointed out that the community has now returned to its formal form of peaceful nature since the boys surrendered their arms and weapons.
According to him, the succour came through the aid of a local vigilante group known as (Omoku Security Planning Advisory Council (OSPAC), which he said trained some of the community boys.
He narrated how the Omoku-Elele Road was unsafe due to the activities of the suspected cultists, and added that it was now a safe route after the training of Dioga Security Planning Advisory Council (DESOPAC) members in the community.
“About 21 of our boys received the training from OSPAC. Since they returned, the Omoku-Elele Road has become safe again for commuters and motorists”, he said.
The legal practitioner also hinted that the feat was the sole effort of the community, and added that no individual or government contributed to it.
The CDC chairman, who doubles as the chairman of Ogbakor Omudioga, also expressed hope that they have now gotten it right security-wise going by the level of training and commitment by the boys.
“The community is also a host landlord to Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and SIAT Nigeria Limited but the multinational did little or nothing for the return of peace on the ground that security is purely government affairs, that the community should face their problems in spite of the huge economic importance of the community to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP)”, he lamented
“I summoned a community meeting and told them that enough is enough of the criminal elements, and OSPAC, a local community vigilante group in our neighbouring town was the options”, he stressed.
He also berated the multinationals operating in their soil who abandoned them to their fate during the era of cult activities in the community.
Meanwhile, he has called on residents and business operators in the area to go about their lawful businesses, and maintained that peace has returned to the community.
