Commissioner Urges Media To Contribute Towards Peace, Stability
Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr Samuel Aruwan, has urged the media to set agenda that will lead to peace and stability in Nigeria.
Aruwan made the appeal at the weekend at the opening of a workshop on Reporting for National Stability, organised by Non-violence Peace Institute in collaboration with Absolute Press, for journalists in Kaduna.
According to him, the future of the country lies with the media, as such it should focus on issues that would stabilise the country and engender development.
The commissioner stressed that it was important for the media to uphold credibility while reporting, especially on security issues which is capable of destabilizing the country.
Aruwan added that the media should insulate itself from bias, confront issues with honesty and be neutral while considering the common goal, which is national security.
Aruwan further advised for deeper investigation on issues while avoiding sentiments in which ever way.
“The media is a sensitive organ, it sets agenda. If it sets agenda that will enhance patrotism, stability and peace, the society will be left with no option but to follow that line,” he said.
He emphasised that security problem affects all members of the society, as such everyone has a role to play, including the media in ensuring sustainable peace.
Aruwan said media practitioners must detach themselves from personal, religious, ethnic and political interests while reporting security issues.
In his goodwill message, Commandant of NSCDC in the state, Babangida Dutsima, called on journalists to always “get it right while reporting security.”
Dutsima who was represented by the command’s Public Relation Officer, Mr Orndiir Terzungwe, said the media should accord national security top priority.
