NYCN Chairman Seeks Police, Youth’s Synergy On Crime War
The Rivers State branch Chairman of the the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Comrade Chijioke Ihunwo, has called for synergy between the Nigerian Police Force and the youth in order to win the war against crime.
Ihunwo made the call at a security meeting in Rumuibekwe in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area recently.
He said the call became imperative following the repeated misunderstanding between the police and the youth at any demonstration by the youth.
The youth leader recalled how the police attacked them during a peaceful protest in a particular company’s premises in Port Harcourt.
He pointed out that the police and youth ought to work as partnera, if the fight against crime must be actualised.
Ihunwo also noted that the era of voilent protest among the youths were over due to the high level of dedication among the leaders.
On the issue of job qualification/skills acquisition, he said that the youth are well equipped to be employed in any company.
He further pointed out that companies were using such as an alibi to deny the youth their rights.
The NYCN boss also regretted that some community leaders could still sell job opportunities in their areas even in the face of job scarcity.
To him, joblessness was the main cause of youth restiveness, and added that jobs should be provided for young people.
Some security operatives who disagreed with the youth leader, said that the youths were not willing to work, but interested in crime.
They said that until the youth came plain in the request, the fight against crime may not be actualised.
They reasoned that the youths were the major actors in crime commission, and until they made a u-turn, the needed peace will not return to the communities.
Other stakeholders who also spoke, warned the police against the issue of reporting their sources to suspected criminals in event of intelligence report.
The meeting was at the instance of the Nye Nwe Eli Rumuibekwe, HRH Eze Raymond Elewa, in an attempt to combat crime in that part of the state.
It would be recalled that the state Governor, Cheif (Barr) Nyesom Wike, had earlier warned against all forms of protest to companies operating in the state and its premises.
