Nigeria and Senegal are looking good at the ongoing 2019 African Games, following their important midweek wins.
The matchday two action opened with Group A games on Tuesday, as Nigeria defeated South Africa 2-0 in Sale, thanks to goals from YiraSor and Ahmad Ghali. This result, combined with Amajita having their cancelled match against Morocco from last week awarded to the hosts has seen them eliminated from semi-final contention.
And Morocco, despite the three points awarded to them is not looking in great shape either, as they succumbed 2-0 to Burkina Faso. The junior Stallions secured the three points via goals from Ibrahim Ouattara and Elliass Dianda, joining Nigeria at the top of the group on four points.
Wednesday’s action in El Mansouria saw Mali impose themselves with an impressive 3-0 win over Burundi in the early game and the midweek round wrapped up with Senegal defeating Ghana 1-0, courtesy of an early goal from Ibrahima Drame to join Mali on four points at the head of Group B. With a match against already eliminated Burundi to come, the young Teranga Lions will be confident of progression to the semi-finals.
The final matches in Group A will be played on Friday evening, with all eyes on Morocco v Nigeria in Sale. The hosts will need to win against Paul Aigbogun’s Flying Eagles to have a chance of moving into the final four. The other match, played simultaneously in Mansouria, sees already-eliminated South Africa take on Burkina Faso, who need only avoid defeat to guarantee advancement.
Group B wraps up with Senegal taking on Burundi in Mansouria and Mali tackling Ghana in Sale. The latter game will be the key encounter, with the Black Satellites desperate to beat the young Eagles and push into the semi-finals, as they search for a second title to add to their gold medal in 2011.
