The lawmaker representing Akuku-Toru Constituency II in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Isaiah Lolo Opuende, has called on his constituents to assist security agencies in checking pirate attacks along the Kula waterways.
This is as he said the launch of the new security architecture ‘Operation Sting’ by Governor Nyesom Wike will address insecurity across the state.
He called on stakeholders in Akuku/Toru and Asari-Toru Local Government Areas to synergize in tackling insecuritiy in their domains.
According to him, “The Rivers State governor, by the launch of Operation Sting, has come to rescue us. This will go a long way to help us. The locals, indigenes of various communities should be carried along because they know the nooks and crannies of our water ways. With their knowledge of the creeks, we will involve them with the support of our executives.
“Also, the local government chairmen of Akuku- Toru and Asari-Toru, stakeholders will come together and know how to facilitate the process.
“This security architecture by our dear Governor, Chief, Barr. Nyesom Wike is a welcome development. If the local government chairmen, comprising the two local governments, along with the members representing the various councils aforementioned will come together on the way forward.”
The lawmaker expressed the optimism that Operations Sting will also stop the proliferation of arms as well as reduce crime rate in the state.
“This will help in making the place peaceful for everyone because I know that there is proliferation of arms around that area. People who have been into criminality before are still going back into it because they feel they want to influence a particular process. Some of them are buying whatever they feel they can use to intimidate others and that is not what we want.
“The government hosting the security architecture will go a long way to ameliorate this particular problem. Citizens will not be free to carry out arms at their will and it will bring down the rate of crime at our waterways,” Opuende said.
