Building Collapse: Builders Call For Laws
As part of measures to check building collapse and high fatality at construction sites, professional builders under the umbrella of the Nigerian Institute of Builders (NIOB) have called for laws to enforce building codes, safety and security.
They made the call during the annual general conference of the NIOB tagged, “Health, Safety Enforcement and Professionalism for Sustainable Development in Construction Industry”, in Port Harcourt, last Wednesday.
President of the body, Kenneth Nduka opined that making a law for safety and security at building sites have become necessary following spates of building collapse across the nation.
Nduka decried the high fatality rates and loss of lives in recent building collapse cases in Port Harcourt and Lagos as a result of poor safety and adherence to building codes.
He stressed that when such laws are passed it will help infuse professionalism and ensure that all forms of sharp practices are eliminated in the built sector.
“In this era of building collapse, we believe safety should be made an attitude, it’s a factor that should be imputed into all activities. So, every builder must embrace it”, Nduka emphasised.
While speaking on the topic, “Appraisal of Health Safety Practices of Small Medium Construction Sites”, Dr Muyiwa Abubakar, said the built sector is characterised with risks and hazards which call for safety at all times.
