ATBU Shut Down Over Collapsed Bridge …Four Students Killed, Seven Injured

The management of the Abubakar Tafawa Belewa University, Bauchi, has reacted to the collapse of a bridge in the University campus campus, revealing that school lost two students in the accident.
The incident was as a result of a heavy downpour in the State which lasted for several hours.
But in a statement to newsmen, yesterday afternoon signed by Prof. M.A Abdulazeez, the school Director of Media, the school said that full details of the incident was still being awaited, adding that the Senate had decided to close down the institution for the time being.
The statement reads in part, “I regret to announce the death of two of our students on August 5, 2019. The unfortunate accident that led to the demise of the students occurred late last night on August 5, 2019, at Gubi Campus of our University.
“While the full details of the occurrence are being awaited, the University Senate, at an emergency meeting this morning, has decided to close the University in honour of the students. The reopening date has been fixed for Tuesday, August 19, 2019.
Meanwhile, the management of theinstitution, has confirmed the death of four students who were killed following the collapse of the university bridge after a torrential rainfall last Monday night.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Muhammad Ahmad Abdullazeez, who stated this yesterday while addressing newsmen on the update of the incident, said that the University received the news of the unfortunate incident with great shock as the lives of victims were cut short at the prime of their lives.
He said seven students sustained injuries, adding that the four students who lost their lives include three boys and a girl and were students of the Department of Management and Business Education.
“We learnt that while the students were returning to their hostels during the rainfall last night, the connecting bridge between their reading area and their hostel collapsed and four students drowned.
“Others who were injured in the accident are currently receiving treatment in the University Medical Centre. For now, we cannot ascertain if there were some missing students because the investigation is still ongoing.
“The University had an emergency meeting in which it decided to close down the institution for two weeks in honour of the dead students. The reopening date has been fixed for Tuesday, August 19, 2019,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor commiserated with the families of the deceased persons and the entire community of the ATBU on the unfortunate development and prayed to God to grant them eternal rest.
