Rivers Police Arrest Online Fake Reporter

The Rivers State Police Command says it has arrested an online fake news reporter, one Mr. Onyeche Igwe Wofuru, Male, 38 years from Egbeda in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State.
A report issued by the Police Public Relations Officer of the State Command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni and made available to The Tide in Port Harcourt at the weekend the explained that the suspect and his syndicate had consistently peddled fake news and false security reports thereby creating unnecessary panic and tension in the state.
The report noted that the suspect who claimed to be an online journalist was arrested on the 26th of April, 2019 at about 2000 hurs by men of the Rumueprikom (Kala) Police Station, acting on credible information.
The document stated that in recent time, the command had to contend with embarrassing reports on the increased criminal activities in the state among other damaging stories.
It pointed out that the suspect, a member of the syndicate carrying out “smear campaign against the command confessed to be responsible for a recent online publication alleging that a certain building in Rumuokwuta was being used to commit various crimes including rape, armed robbery and called on the police to storm the place and demolish the building, “an act which he knows to be false and does not believe in its existence. But only intended to set the police against the landlord and his tenants, thereby subjecting them to malicious arrest and prosecution to satisfy his evil and selfish motive.”
According to the press release, the suspect has made useful confessions and will be charged to court as soon as investigation is over.
It stated that efforts were on to arrest other members of the syndicate.
The release said some exhibit which include one (1) Dell Laptop, two (2) android phones, one (1) infinix Hot Note and One (1) techno torchlight phone were recovered from the suspect.
