A foremost cultural group in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nwokorogbo Dancing Group of ONEGA says the ultimate aim is to wax and launch albums from their folk-songs.
The chairman of the group, Mr. Tony Fente Chuks who disclosed this to our correspondent during the 2919 Word Tuberculosis (TB) Day organised by the Rivers State Ministry of Health and held at the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers Secretariat in Port Harcourt on Sunday, said their cultural musical performance has come of age in the area that they always exhibit and perform during traditional marriages, burials any other ceremonies.
Mr. Chuks hinted that the group with a membership strength of 30 male and female cultural outfit was an off-shoot of their fore-bearers who for age could not continue with the group, but have to t ake-over the mantle from them as a way of promoting traditional music or folk-songs.
He opined that as they planned to launch and wax albums from their songs, their greatest challenge had been funds to execute the project as well as change their uniforms, acquire sophiscated instruments and a vehicle to ease their movement, as most of them reside at different parts in ONELGA, with their base at Ede Community.
The group chairman further disclosed that during one of the cultural festivals held in the state, they performed very well and assured that with some assistance and encouragement, they would go places and make ONELGA and Rivers State proud.
Chuks noted that they are unique in their performance as they use local instruments like trumpet called Opi-horn, base drums, clay pots, gong (Uyoro) among others while the female dancers used Ijojor and tied their chest to show case the skills in them. He used the forum to thank the patron of the club, Dr Shadrack Akalogu for all his contributions to the group.
It would be recalled that the group which performed at the 2019 World Tuberculosis Day in Port Harcourt stole the admiration of the traditional rulers and other dignitaries and members of the Health sector with their skilful display that even the Eze Ali Usomini II of Ogbaland, His Royal Highness, Eze A.N. Osoh and Eze Igburu of Ogbaland, His Royal Highness, Eze C. N. Igwe joined the group and danced at the floor of the secretariat auditorium.
